Newcastle Jets coach Gary van Egmond has signed at extension to his contract which will keep him at the club until 2013/14.

Van Egmond, who guided the Jets to a Grand Final victory in 2007/2008, is in his second year of a two-year contract.

Newcastle finished outside the top six last season, after van Egmond was brought to replace Branko Culina, but with much focus on a change of playing style, many expect the Hunter club to finish higher up the table this term.

“It is exciting news for the Club and for the playing group to have Gary extend his contract at the Jets,” Jets CEO Robbie Middleby said.

“Gary fits the mould of what we are doing at the Jets and we have faith that he is continuing to build a team in which Newcastle can be proud.

“It is encouraging for our young playing group to have an outstanding coach that is committed to the Jets for another season.”

Van Egmond said he was pleased to have the faith of the club for what he sees as a long-term project.

“I feel very privileged to be the coach of the Newcastle Jets and it is wonderful to be extending my time here for at least another year,” van Egmond said.

“I see a bright future, for this season and for many years to come, in both the development of the players and in the total culture of the club.

“It is exciting times; we have a great representation of local talent in our senior group and near 100 per cent in our youth team.

“We have a great membership base, the second largest in the A-League, which shows how passionate our supporters are and I hope to be able to equal their passion.”
