There will be goals! Get ready for another cracker at Hunter Stadium as the Jets continue their flight to the finals!
With the end of a thrilling Hyundai A-League 2011/12 season approaching, Newcastle Jets are hitting form at the perfect time.
They’ve won two on the bounce now and with a game against the ladder’s bottom club on Friday, they have a chance to nestle themselves within the finals places with just two games remaining, so get yourself down to Hunter Stadium and cheer the Jets on to a hat-trick of wins!
The New South Wales side took a massive leap towards securing a finals spot with a fantastic away win in Melbourne on Saturday.
Having defended strongly in the early stages, Ryan Griffiths opened the scoring in the 20th minute. However, when Harry Kewell equalised straight away from the spot, it looked like being a tough task for the Jets. But Jacob Pepper proved himself to be the hero, scoring his first and second Hyundai A-League goals to ensure his club’s first win on the road against Victory since 2007.
While things are going great for Newcastle at the moment, the same cannot be said for this Friday’s opponents. Gold Coast United’s 2-0 defeat at Westpac Stadium on Sunday was the least of their worries.
With all manner of much-discussed off-field turmoil putting the club’s very future in doubt, credit must go to the players for giving such a gallant display in New Zealand against a very strong Wellington team.
Indeed, the sides were only separated by a single goal before a stoppage-time second put the result beyond doubt. While United are bottom of the league, the Jets certainly need to be wary of their opponents this Friday. They have been playing some good stuff of late, and have recently drawn with Melbourne Victory and Central Coast Mariners.
If the previous clashes between these two sides in the Hyundai A-League 2011/12 season are any indication, there are sure to be goals galore on Friday night.
Over two games, the ball has been in the net no fewer than nine times, with each team picking up a victory. Early on in the campaign Gold Coast picked up their first win of the season with a 3-1 triumph at Skilled Park.
Meanwhile, the Jets got their own back on home soil with a 3-2 win in a belter of a game in the New Year. If Sunday is anything like as entertaining as either of these two tussles, we’re in for a real treat.
While, on paper, this might look like a home banker, football isn’t played on paper. The Hyundai A-League has proved time and time again that nothing is guaranteed and, with United having already beaten Newcastle once this season, it’s up to the Squadron to help cheer the Jets on to three vital points. Be there to experience the fantastic drama live!
