The Newcastle Jets have beat out a host of rival clubs to sign exciting Gold Coast United midfielder James Brown on a two-year deal.

The Australian under-23 international, who has made 36 appearances in the A-League, is off-contract with United at the end of the current season and has decided to join the Jets.

Brown will see out the current season with Gold Coast before heading south for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.

“I wish to thank Gold Coast for all they have done for me,” the 21-year-old said.

“We still have the season ahead to focus on which is what I will do, and once it is over I will look forward to moving to Newcastle and joining the Jets.”

Jets coach Gary van Egmond believes Brown is the perfect player to suit the style of football the club are looking to play.

“James is the modern day footballer and a quality player,” van Egmond said.

“We look forward to having him in the squad and further developing his talent.”

Jets CEO Robbie Middleby added: “James is a great young talent and we know he was highly sought after.”

“We are delighted he is coming to Newcastle and we can’t wait to see him in Jets colours next season.”
