Wellington Phoenix striker Paul Ifill could be back in action for the latter stages of the regular A-League season after scans on Monday ruled out any major damage to his left leg.
Ifill landed awkwardly just 10 minutes into this side’s 4-0 win against the Newcastle Jets on Saturday and was taken from the field on a stretcher amid fears he had broken his left leg.
But after initial X-rays ruled out any broken bones an MRI scan revealed a high ankle sprain and membrane damage that is likely to keep him out of action for six weeks.
That could see the talismanic striker return for the final two matches of the regular season – against Adelaide United and Sydney FC – and the play-offs should the Phoenix, currently in seventh, qualify.
“The specialist has said I’ll be out for six weeks but obviously I’ll be aiming to be back before that,” Ifill said.
“It’s probably better news than I was expecting, to be honest. Hopefully the boys can keep things going well in the meantime and I can come back and play a part during the remainder of the season.”
The Phoenix’s next match is against North Queensland Fury in Townsville on December 27.
