New recruit Charlie Miller has been given the thumbs-up by Gold Coast United leaders Jason Culina and Michael Thwaite after debuting for the club on Sunday.
Miller was his menacing self in attack, providing the first goal for Shane Smeltz, and finding plenty of room in behind the Jets midfield.
Captain Culina gave his new midfield partner a glowing report and indicated with enthusiasm that he is keen to strike up a lethal attack with the former Rover.
“Charlie showed against the Jets what good touches he has got,” Culina said.
“That was the first time I actually got on the field with him and straight away there was a bit of an understanding there.”
“He knows the game very well, he is very smart and I am really happy he is here on the Gold Coast.”
While Miller is only in the squad for injured Brazilian Robson, Culina hopes that a string of good performances can convince club officials to make Miller a permanent fixture in the United midfield.
“I’d really love to see him stay. He is a great guy, he is great for the team and he is good for the fans so I’m really hoping we can find a way for him to stay.”
Culina’s deputy Michael Thwaite was equally impressed with the Scotsman, but insists that there is plenty more to come as unfamiliar players develop combinations.
“I think it will take a while until we adjust and hit our straps with Charlie being the type of player that he is,” Thwaite said.
“We have only had a week to train with him, but towards the second half against Newcastle you could already see him starting to find some space between their midfield and defenders.”
Thwaite said that Miller was the perfect fit for the club which loves to attack and to entertain.
“Obviously Miron (Bleiberg) loves the flamboyant type of player that Charlie is, and he gives plenty of freedom to that type of player on the pitch.”
“Only time will tell how it turns out, but with four home games coming up it will be a good chance for the crowd to come along and see what a good player Charlie is.”
