Teenage sensation strikes again but former Sydney star earns Big Blue draw

Check out the highlights as Melbourne Victory hosted Sydney FC in the Liberty A-League.

Rachel Lowe scored against her former side as Melbourne Victory earned a 1-1 draw with Liberty A-League champions Sydney FC in the Big Blue.

Teenage sensation Maddie Caspers continued her red-hot form at AAMI Park, where the 16-year-old scored her second goal in as many matches to give Sydney a seventh-minute lead on Friday.

But former Sydney forward Lowe ensured Victory would claim a share of the spoils after converting a 20th-minute penalty, which she celebrated by slapping the badge against her ex-employers.

The result sees Sydney drop to third in the standings through 14 rounds, while Victory are sixth.

Sydney made a strong start to proceedings in Melbourne, where Victory and the Sky Blues participated in a joint Welcome to Country ahead of the Big Blue as part of Victory’s U-NITE Multicultural celebration.

Sky Blues star Princess Ibini tried her luck from distance in the fifth minute and she saw her shot sail just over the crossbar.

But Sydney got their goal two minutes later courtesy of in-form Caspers.

Cortnee Vine showed off tremendous control on the wing and drove past three opponents as she created space for her young teammate to finish into the net from close range.

The visitors were causing plenty of problems until Victory had a chance to get back into the contest from the penalty spot in the 20th minute.

There was a long conversation between the referee and lineswoman after Sydney goalkeeper Jada Whyman clattered into McKenzie Weinert and after the spot-kick was awarded, Lowe converted against her former club to make it four goals in her past four outings.

As play balanced itself out, there was another chance for Ibini two minutes into the second half but her long-range effort flashed just wide of the post.

Sydney had a golden opportunity after Kayla Morrison was caught in possession by Vine in the 64th minute but the Sky Blues were unable to bounce as Abbey Lemon was thwarted by the desperate Morrison after her error.

Three minutes later, the Sky Blues were denied by the woodwork after Jordan Thompson hit the post.
