Michael Zullo has broken one of the longest goal-scoring droughts in Hyundai A-League history and with it, helped Sydney FC continue their solid start to the defence of the Championship crown.
Zullo fired home the second goal in the Sky Blues’ 3-2 win over Wellington Phoenix, his first goal since September 2008 when he was a Brisbane player and netted against Melbourne Victory as a teenaged substitute.
Only five of the other 28 players who took the field that day are still playing in the Hyundai A-League.
“I don’t get on the scoresheet too often,” Zullo told Fox Sports Sunday Shootout in an early contender for understatement of the season.
“I’m a left-back now, so I’ve got an excuse,’ he laughed.
The 3-2 win was the Sky Blues second to start their Hyundai A-League 2017/18 campaign and Zullo is satisfied with how the side has started the new season.
“We wanted to get off to a good start and we’ve gotten off to a great start this season; we’ve made another FFA Cup final and two wins on the trot in the league,” he said.
“I think we played some unbelievable football tonight and were unlucky not to get more and make it more comfortable at the end.
“I don’t think we made any mistakes – I think they just took their chances and executed well.”
Sydney FC now prepare for a massive clash on Saturday night when they meet Western Sydney Wanderers in the season’s first Sydney derby at what is sure to be a jam-packed Allianz Stadium.
The Wanderers were the only team to beat Sydney FC last season and have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the new campaign.
But Zullo says it’s hard to assess the strength of their fiercest rivals.
“It’s only been two games so it’s pretty early and they were in a bit of an unusual situation with the coach leaving,” he said.
“But we’re not too concerned about them; we’re just worried about ourselves.
“I know it’s a cliché, but we’re the champions and we’re going out this year to win again and be as dominant as we were last year,” warned Zullo.
