Mariners Grand Final hero earns Young Socceroos call-up alongside star cast of A-Leagues talent

Central Coast Mariners forward Miguel Di Pizio has received a call-up to the 23-player Subway Young Socceroos squad set to tour South America during the June international window.

The Young Socceroos will face Uruguay and Chile in South America, ahead of the AFF U19 Youth Championship set to be hosted in Indonesia in July.

Di Pizio earned a call-up into Young Socceroos head coach Trevor Morgan’s squad after a dream end to the Isuzu UTE A-League season at the Mariners.

The 18-year-old won the AFC Cup and league Premiership/Championship double this season, and became the youngest scorer in A-League Men Grand Final history with the second of three goals in the Mariners’ comeback win over Melbourne Victory in Saturday night’s title decider.

Di Pizio is one of 16 players from Isuzu UTE A-League clubs selected for the June friendlies, including Melbourne City rising star Max Caputo, Perth Glory’s Daniel Bennie, Adelaide United striker Luka Jovanovic and breakout Brisbane Roar forward Thomas Waddingham.

“As part of our strategy, following on from matches against European opponents late last year, we’re exposing the boys to completely different opposition, playing styles and conditions, some of which they’ll have never experienced before,” said Young Socceroos coach Morgan.

“These types of opportunities are so valuable for the broader education and development of young players, which we’ll reap the benefits of in years to come.

“I’m really excited about the quality we’ve got right across both this squad and the entire age group, selecting only 23 players was difficult, but I feel we’ve got a great balance in this squad as we look at what’s ahead in 2024.
