Kahli Johnson is preparing for the 2022 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup but the Young Matilda has sorted out her club future, signing for Liberty A-League newcomers Western United.
Johnson and Australia kick-off their World Cup campaign against hosts Costa Rica in less than 24 hours (Thursday 12pm AEST), but in the meantime, the Young Matildas attacker has joined Western ahead of their inaugural 2022-23 A-League Women campaign.
The 18-year-old made her ALW breakthrough with Premiers Sydney FC last season, tallying five appearances for the Sky Blues.
“I’m really excited by this opportunity to join the first ever women’s team at Western United,” she said.
“It’s been a big past year for me and I’m confident that Western United will help continue my development on and off the pitch.
“I can’t wait to get started, and to hopefully create something special at the club.”
Johnson is the third recruit for expansion club Western, who have also signed Alana Cerne and American attacker Hannah Keane.
Western head coach Mark Torcaso added: “There’s a reason why Kahli has been representing the national teams for so many years now, I’m delighted to be able to bring her in.
“She already has big qualities, but it’s the size of her potential and her maturity and mentality at such a young age that makes this signing extra special.
“I’m sure Kahli will achieve big things in Green and Black and I feel really honoured that we’ll be able to help shape some of that potential here in the West.”
