Sky Blues strike late to ground Jets
Sydney FC remained in touch with the Group B summit thanks to their late 3-2 win over Newcastle Jets at Lambert Park on Saturday.
It looked like finishing 2-2 after the sides traded goals in the first 64 minutes, with Harry Van Der Saag and Hamish Lamberton finding the net for the Sky Blues, while Jack Simmons and Joey Champness scored for the visitors.
But there was drama to come in the final minute.
Jordi Swibel slipped a neat pass into the path of Van Der Saag who slammed his shot across the keeper to grab a brace and the winner for Sydney FC.
The result kept Sydney FC’s Group B premiership hopes alive as they moved to within three points of the league-leading Wanderers and still with a game in hand.
That game will be played this Sunday against Canberra United.

Mariners produce stirring comeback
The Central Coast Mariners came from behind to seal a 2-1 win over Canberra United to go level at the top of the Group B standings.
While United have yet to register a point this season, they took a shock lead inside 15 minutes when James Carli’s header looped over keeper Aidan Munford.
Down 1-0 at the break the Mariners needed a response and got it when Dylan Ruiz Diaz’s marauding run through a number of Canberra defenders ended with the youngster finding the net.
The Mariners continued to press for a winner and it came in stoppage-time with Charles M’Mombwa’s classy back-heel evading the keeper to pinch a valuable three points.
While the Mariners have joined the Wanderers at the top of the standings, the Gosford club have played one game more.
Congratulations to Ray Junna's #YLeague boys who came from behind to seal a late win! https://t.co/c9FRFpkBCb #CCMFC #CCMvCBR https://t.co/mj8WhOcwmT
