Though we are just at the halfway point of the Westfield W-League season this match-up is shaping as crucial to the finals hopes of both teams. With Canberra United way out in front, and perennial challengers Sydney FC and Brisbane building momentum, it is more than conceivable that Melbourne Victory and Newcastle will be jostling for a remaining finals berth come seasons end. Aside from the potentially pivotal nature of this match, an intriguing sub-plot will be the return of Jets and Matildas goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri to her home state after an abrupt off-season departure from the Victory.
Melbourne are perhaps the unluckiest team in the league, having suffered three one-goal defeats this season. However they are yet to beat a team higher on the table and this contest could provide a gauge to their ongoing progress. At the moment they have their nose in front of the Jets on the table thanks only to goal difference, although the Victory have played a match more. Melbourne-s most recent visit to Geelong last season resulted in a 1-0 win over Canberra, with the three points going a long way towards the club achieving their maiden finals appearance.
The challenge for the Jets going into the match will be to not only recover from two hefty defeats, but to use last weekend-s free weekend to their advantage. As always the great unknown will be the mood, and subsequent impact, offered by Lisa De Vanna. Four goals in the opening two rounds for the pacy frontrunner gave way to two muted performances, with the Jets consequently losing altitude with defeats against Sydney FC and Canberra United.

The champions against the runaway leaders. The heavyweight match-ups in the Westfield W-League are coming thick and fast at the moment with this contest shaping up as one of the highlights of the season. Defeat here for Brisbane and it-s not unrealistic to say that the premiership will be all but out their reach, with the margin stretching to eight points.
The Roar seems to be building momentum nicely, having won three on the trot. Not that they had it all their own way last weekend against the visiting Melbourne Victory, before running-out 1-0 winners. The recent return of experienced Matildas Kim Carroll and Aivi Luik from their club commitments in Denmark, plus the goalscoring form of Tameka Butt, has been among the recent positives for the Roar. On the debit side rookie midfielder Ashley Spina is the latest to be struck by the knee injury curse and will miss the remainder of the season alongside team-mate Elise Kellond-Knight.
Canberra-s perfect record of five straight wins is arguably under more pressure than it has been all season. Yes, United overcame Sydney FC on the road a few weeks back, but the Sky Blues were in truth somewhat under-strength on that occasion. Historically, visits to Brisbane has produced mixed results for Canberra, with the Queensland capital being the venue for their grand final defeat in season one, but also the scene of their first ever Westfield W-League victory (and Brisbane-s first defeat), way back in round two of the opening season.

Westfield W-League/National Youth League double header
The form book says Sydney FC should win this fairly comfortably. The Sky Blues were 4-1 victors last week in Adelaide, while Perth Glory crashed 5-2 at home against Brisbane Roar last time they took the field. However, while upsets have been few and far between this season, the competition is arguably the tightest in the short history of the Westfield W-League.
That was in evidence last weekend as competition aristocrats Sydney struggled for over an hour before finally subduing bottom side Adelaide and running away with the match. Prolific goalscorer Leena Khamis made a welcome return to the line-up for a first start of the season and her presence in the Sky Blues line-up gave the attack a more balanced look. Newly crowned Asian young player of the year Caitlin Foord will finally hope to make a first starting appearance of the season after yet another dynamic cameo last weekend.
The Glory-s eventful campaign continued last weekend with their visit to Newcastle postponed because of a week of rain on the east coast, which contrasted sharply with a series of significant bushfires in the west. On the positive side, Norway international Lisa-Marie Woods seems finally set to make her Australian debut in the visit to Sydney. The last time the Glory visited Leichhardt Oval two years ago, they took the lead with Sam Kerr hitting the goal of the season, before eventually being overran 5-2. Such strong second-half showings have been a hallmark of Sydney-s season and impressive young Glory shotstopper Mackenzie Arnold is sure to be in for a busy afternoon.
