Tom Glover’s brilliant response to Wrexham transfer rumour that’s ‘absolutely blown up’

Melbourne City goalkeeper Tom Glover has laid to rest any rumours of him linking up with Wrexham AFC ahead of the premiers’ Semi Final second leg against Sydney FC.

In late April, parody Twitter account ‘Agent A-League’ tweeted that Glover was on his way to the Welsh based club that’s owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The story was picked up by a number of Wrexham fan accounts and even SportBible, who believed the City shot-stopper was joining the recently promoted National League champions and replacing outgoing keeper Ben Foster.

Glover is currently out of contract and is reportedly leaving City at the conclusion of the Finals Series to a European based club.

Ahead of this weekend’s clash against Sydney FC, Glover was asked if there’s been any contact with Wrexham and cleared up any speculation of him joining the club.

“Yeah I actually just got off the phone to Ryan Reynolds before I jumped in here,” he said on Thursday.

“We can squash that mate, that rumour… I am actually a fan. Someone has seen that I follow them on Instagram and now its just absolutely blown up.

“I’m not going to Wrexham. I’m a big fan of them, I’ve followed them throughout the playoffs, their back end of the season, saw them get promoted. So no, not going to Wrexham.”

Glover said he’s been inundated with messages ever since the rumours began to swirl.

“About 400 (people have messaged me),” he said.

“My phone has been blowing up. Is this true? Congratulations. Are you going to Wrexham? No, its a fake tweet and its absolutely blown up.

“Some of these big sport pages have gotten onto it. People from England have messaged me and all my mates. No, definitely not true.”

City coach Rado Vidosic saw the funny side in the rumours linking his goalkeeper with the newly promoted League Two outfit.

“We did (have a laugh about Glover to Wrexham rumours). I asked him what part of Hollywood does he prefer, so we had a little bit of a laugh,” Vidosic said.

“He has been fantastic. That (Semi Final first leg v Sydney FC) was probably one of his best games that he played for us, especially while I’ve been here.

“He is growing into a really good goalkeeper. He’s way off his best as many young goalkeepers are, they can go well into their 30s. There’s so much ahead of him. Hopefully we can keep him, but if not, good luck to him with his future journey.”

“Not at all (a distraction). I laugh at it. I think its funny,” Glover said.

“Something so small has turned into something so big. I laugh about it. Definitely not a distraction at all.”

Glover’s City will be looking to book their place in a fourth straight Grand Final when they host Sydney on Friday night, with the scores currently level 1-1 on aggregate heading into the decisive leg.
