Wanderers defender Wilmering ruled out for season with knee injury

Talented young defender Daniel Wilmering will miss the rest of the Hyundai A-League season after suffering a devastating knee injury at training on Tuesday.

Daniel Wilmering’s Hyundai A-League season is over after the Western Sydney Wanderers defender suffered a crushing knee injury.

After breaking down in training on Tuesday, the club confirmed the 18-year-old has torn his anterior cruciate ligament and strained medial and posterior cruciate ligaments.

Wilmering made his Hyundai A-League debut as a substitute last season and became a bigger part of head coach Markus Babbel’s plans in 2019/20, starting seven matches and making two substitute appearances.

Affectionally nicknamed ‘Wolverine’, the former Wanderers ball boy is aiming to take the positivies from what his club has described as a ‘devastating knee injury’.

“It’s disappointing, but that is football. This will only make make me stronger as a person and a player,” Wilmering told wswanderersfc.com.au

“I can take some good things away from my first season in the senior squad. I got to play more games than I had anticipated, so that is a real positive.

“My team mates, especially [captain] Mitch Duke, have been fantastic and given me a lot of encouragement since they found out the news.

“Now, I just want to get over the operation, which will be early next year, and start working on my rehabilitation.”
