Wilkinson: Sky Blues can get even better!

You’ve won 5-0, you’re top of the Hyundai A-League, you’ve got more points than you had at the same stage of your last all-conquering season and your closest challenger is five points behind.

You’d be fairly satisfied, right?

Not if Sydney FC’s veteran defender Alex Wilkinson is anything to go by.

In fact, frighteningly, the Sky Blues veteran believes his side can get even better!

“There are certain facets of the game I know we can do a lot better at,” said Wilkinson ahead of Friday night’s clash with Melbourne City.

“Obviously it was a great result in the derby and probably the best we’ve played all year.

“To win 5-0 boosts confidence and the morale in the group is really good.

“Not just after last week but the way results have been going for us lately.

“But there’s still quite a bit of improvement in us.

“We’ve got a short turnaround this week with Melbourne City so we’re looking forward to that game now and our full focus is on that.”

Sydney FC celebrate

City are minus Tim Cahill after his departure from the club last week, but Wilkinson doesn’t see them as a weaker side without his former Caltex Socceroos team-mate.

“It doesn’t bother us who we’re playing,” the veteran defender said.

“He’s left now, but they’ve got a number of other quality players who can come in and play that position, so for us it doesn’t matter.

“For us, it’s about what we want to do when we have the ball and don’t have the ball.”

While praising his former club’s season under new coach Warren Joyce, Wilkinson admitted he hadn’t examined City’s performances too closely.

“He [Joyce] has come in and is doing a very good job,” he said.

“But I haven’t looked too much in depth at any other team and how they play so it’s hard for me to comment on that.

“We concentrate on ourselves and how we’re going to play.

“We don’t look too much at the ladder but it’s another game that we want to try and win.

“Our form at home is very good so hopefully we can get a good crowd out there like last week.”
