Westfield Young Matildas squad named

Ante Juric has announced the 23-player squad charged with getting the Westfield Young Matildas to next year’s AFC U-19 Women’s Championships in China.

The side heads out for Vietnam later this week for the qualifying tournament in Hanoi, with three tough games in just five days from November 5-9.

The bulk of Juric’s squad has been drawn from the Westfield W-League and he is optimistic about the side’s chances in the tournament.

“We’ve had number of high quality training camps in Canberra recently with the majority of players currently involved in the Westfield W-League ,” Juric said.

“In addition I have included a number of the mini-Matildas [Ellie Carpenter, Alex Chidiac, Kobie Ferguson, Princess Ibini-Isei and Hannah Southwell] who recently performed well at the AFC U-16 Championship qualifiers in Malaysia. 

“We are all looking forward to the challenge of the upcoming three matches with the ultimate goal of qualifying for the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship next year.

“I am very confident that this group of players have the necessary qualities to be successful.”

The Westfield Young Matildas kick off the qualifying phase against Hong Kong on Wednesday, November 5, followed by matches against Singapore [November 7] and Vietnam [November 9].

Only the top side in the group will qualify for next year’s AFC U-19 Women’s Championships.

That tournament is being staged in Nanjing in China, from August 19–30 August.
