Sydney FC have dealt the Westfield W-League an ominous warning after a record-breaking 11-0 victory against Perth Glory.
A remarkable nine second-half goals saw the Sky Blues demolish the existing record scoreline of 7-1 achieved by Newcastle Jets last season against Adelaide United.
The win took Sydney to within three points of Canberra United as the leaders narrowly failed to collect all three points in drawing 2-2 on the road in Brisbane.
Meanwhile, in an equally pivotal match, Melbourne Victory put a three-point margin between themselves and fellow top-four aspirants Newcastle Jets with a 2-1 win over their rivals in Geelong.
The Week 7 results set up a fascinating and potentially season-defining contest next Saturday as Canberra host Sydney, where victory for the home side will virtually sew up the premiership.
Much of the weekend focus though was grabbed by Sydney who were unrelenting in attack, scoring a remarkable five goals in a 15-minute period immediately after half-time.
Renee Rollason, Kylie Ledbrook and Leena Khamis all scored trebles, while Kyah Simon, on her long-awaited return from injury, bagged a goal during injury time.
Such is Sydney-s depth in attack, Simon and fellow Westfield Matildas striker Sarah Walsh started on the bench while AFC Young Player of the Year Caitlin Foord was subbed off after an hour.
In Brisbane, the Roar lost touch with their long-term rivals, falling two points behind the Sky Blues, after their draw against the visiting Canberra.
The team from the nation-s capital came close to maintaining a perfect record of six wins from as many starts only to unluckily concede an own goal with just two minutes remaining.
The two teams traded early goals through Joanne Burgess for the Roar and a Sally Shipard penalty for United.
The visitors then took the lead for the first time through competition leading scorer Michelle Heyman, before Ellie Brush put through her own net to ensure the spoils were shared.
An equally crucial match-up took place in Geelong where home side Melbourne Victory scored a comeback win as Jodie Taylor scored in each half.
Jets ace Lisa De Vanna was largely well handled by the Victory defence, with the visitors hamstrung by the absence of midfield creator Emily van Egmond because of injury.
Earlier Nicole Bolger put the Jets in front but it was to be an unhappy return for goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri on her first return to her hometown state.
