Canberra maintained their winning form in holding off a typically fierce challenge from Melbourne Victory to secure a fourth three-pointer from as many starts. The team from the nation-s capital are the league-s top goals corers, and also have a share of the best defensive record in the league.
First-half goals from Ashleigh Sykes, her second in as many starts, as well American Taryn Hemmings proved too much for the visiting Victory. Kendall Fletcher pulled a goal back in the latter stages, but in a match in which numerous chances were created at either end, it was United-s finishing that proved decisive.
A tight contest was expected in Newcastle between the Jets and Sydney FC and so it proved during a scoreless first half. However, inspirational midfielder Kyle Ledbrook scored almost immediately after the second period commenced to open up the floodgates as a trio of Matildas stars – Thea Slatyer, Catlin Foord and Heather Garriock – put the game out of reach.
Tara Andrews grabbed a late consolation for a Jets side which had lost Lisa De Vanna during the half-time interval following a hefty collision with Sydney goalkeeper Allison Lipsher.
The Jets will have the chance to pull themselves back into title contention next week when they visit leaders Canberra in a match that is shaping as one of the highlights of the season.
Finally in Adelaide, champions Brisbane Roar were made to work overtime before subduing a resilient home side and claiming their first win in their third start.
Captain Clare Polkinghorne and Ashley Spina scored either side of the interval, however Marijana Rajcic-s goal set up a tense finale. The Lady Reds only narrowly failed to find an equaliser after some late pressure, but despite the loss the league-s bottom side will take confidence from their performance against the Westfield W-League heavyweights.
