The Westfield W-League competition ladder has taken on a very different look following round three of the 2011/12 season with Canberra United and Newcastle Jets holding down the top two spots.
For the first time in the four-year history of the competition, neither Sydney FC nor Brisbane Roar feature in the top two with both having lost on the weekend – another Westfield W-League first.
Canberra won 1-0 on the road against Sydney FC to make it three wins from three. It was a similar story for Newcastle as Lisa De Vanna inspired her team to a 3-2 victory in Brisbane as the Jets maintained their perfect record from two starts.
In Perth, the Glory scored a comeback 2-1 win over Adelaide, for whom Rachael Quigley had opened the scoring in just the second minute with a sensational overhead kick.
It was a weekend of firsts for Canberra as they claimed a maiden win over Sydney FC and extended their winning start to three matches.
Ashleigh Sykes scored the only goal of the match midway through the first half in what was the first major opening of the game
An end-to-end second half saw countless chances created at both ends, but remarkable goalkeeping from Canberra-s Lydia Williams, and some poor finishing from Sydney, kept the scoreline unchanged.
While Canberra sit alone at the top of the table, Sydney have picked up just four points from a possible nine and next week face in-form Newcastle Jets.
The new-look Jets proved they are worthy of being tagged as championship contenders with a 3-2 comeback win over Brisbane Roar.
The turning point of the contest came with just under 20 minutes remaining as Roar goalkeeper Casey Dumont was dismissed after bundling over De Vanna.
Playing against her former club, De Vanna coolly converted the penalty before repeating the dose in the dying minutes for a famous win.
Earlier Laura Alleway and Emily Gielnik, playing on her local ground at Cleveland Showgrounds, had the Roar in front after Tara Andrews had equalised for the Jets.
In Perth, the Glory recovered from conceding a goal in the second minute to claim their first win of the campaign.
Erika Elze and Katarina Jukic had Perth in front by half-time in response to Rachael Quigley-s spectacular overhead kick – an early contender for goal of the season.
An open second half was highlighted by Quigley hitting the crossbar from distance but the Glory hung on and Jamie Harnwell secured the first win of his coaching career.
