There’s a spot in the Westfield W-League grand final on the line when Sydney FC host the Newcastle Jets in the first of the semi-finals this weekend.
While the Sky Blues head into the do-or-die clash on the back of a nine-game unbeaten run, they weren’t able to get the better of the Jets in two meetings during the regular season.
Ahead of Saturday’s clash at Leichhardt Oval, we look back at the two previous meetings between the clubs this season.
Round 10 at Allianz Stadium
Sydney FC 2-2 Newcastle Jets
A devastating start by the Sky Blues looked to have them on course for a comfortable win.
Ante Juric’s side scored two cracking goals inside the first half hour, with Westfield Matildas star Caitlin Foord setting up Kylie Ledbrook and winger Princess Ibini.
But the game changed just before the break.
Emily van Egmond pulled one back for the Jets from the penalty spot and the visitors came home strong in the second half, with substitute Gema Simon grabbing a late equaliser.
Round 2 at McDonald Jones Stadium
Newcastle Jets 2-0 Sydney FC
Sydney FC endured a poor start to the season which included this second-up defeat in the Hunter.
And Newcastle’s dominance began inside two minutes with Nikola Orgill planting her header into the top corner from Jenna Kingsley’s cross.
US import Arin Gilliland completed a memorable afternoon for the home side on the half-hour mark with another clinical header.
