Westfield W-League Save of Round 5 – Courtney Newbon

A save of the highest order from Western Sydney Wanderers stopper Courtney Newbon denied Newcastle Jets striker Tara Andrews a certain goal, earning Save of Round 5 honours in the process.

It was a glum day overall for the Red and Black but Newbon’s efforts in goal helped mitigate the damage of Newcastle’s 4-1 victory.

Her greatest contribution to the Wanderers’ cause came when defending a dead ball placed just outside Newbon’s defensive box.

Andrews stood over the ball and dispatched it towards the top right corner of goal but Newbon was quickly over to deny Newcastle’s number nine, tipping the ball with an outstretched right glove off the bar and away from danger.

Newbon’s save may have given some Wanderers fans a sense of déjà vu – not to mention Andrews, who saw Newbon deny her another goal from the exact same circumstances in Round 2 – a stop which also took out Save of the Round.
