Westfield W-League Save of Round 2 – Courtney Newbon

Western Sydney Wanderers goalkeeper Courtney Newbon has won Westfield W-League Save of Round 2 after her athletic diving block to deny Newcastle Jets striker Tara Andrews and keep her side’s lead and eventual three points intact.

Newbon, 20, showed agility and quick thinking to sprawl to her left and palm Andrews’ free-kick attempt onto the bar.

The ball would have otherwise sailed into the back of the net to hand Andrews a brace and bring the score back to 2-2, but Newbon had other ideas as her remarkable save kept the Red and Black in the lead.

Perhaps inspired by her goalkeeper’s block, Wanderers defender Caitlin Cooper rose to the challenge to keep the chance out from the rebound, colliding heavily with opponent and post as she diverted the ball out for a corner when it seemed destined to find the back of the net.
