Westfield W-League Round 8: key match-ups

With the top four sides to face off in the Westfield W-League this weekend, we’re set for some absolutely cracking fixtures in Round 8.

Here’s three key match-ups which could be crucial across the weekend’s action.

Emily van Egmond (Newcastle Jets) v Sam Kerr (Perth Glory)

Having been international team-mates for much of 2017, these two Westfield Matildas stars will go head-to-head this weekend.

Kerr has had a simply sensational year for club and country while van Egmond has been the driving force in midfield for both Australia and the Jets.

Who will earn the bragging rights?

Sam Kerr

Katrina Lee Gorry (Brisbane Roar) v Yukari Kinga (Melbourne City)

These are the two most prolific passers in the opposition half this season.

The diminutive Gorry has played 223 passes in enemy territory while City’s Japanese defender Kinga is close behind with 216.

Look for these two players to again be at the heart of their side’s attacking moves.

Makenzy Doniak (Adelaide United) v Jada Mathyssen-Whyman (Western Sydney Wanderers)

US striker Doniak is Adelaide’s most potent attacking weapon, having scored four goals so far this season, including a hat-trick against Perth Glory in round three.

Looking to prevent her adding to that tally will be Wanderers’ teenaged goalkeeper Mathyssen-Whyman who has saved three-quarters of the shots fired her way this season.
