There’s just two sleeps to go until this season’ Westfield W-League Grand Final and we’re continuing our look back at the first nine deciders.
And the Season Seven grand final produced a memorable match, with Canberra United upsetting Premiers and hosts Perth Glory at nib Stadium.
Westfield Matildas speedster Ashleigh Sykes stole the show for the side from the nation’s capital, bagging a brace in the 3-1 win.
It was a disappointing end to a fantastic campaign by Glory, who finished first and made it through to the club’s first Westfield W-League grand final.
The hosts almost took the lead in the final too when midfielder Collette McCallum lofted a ball over the top of the defence for Caitlin Foord, only for Canberra keeper Chantel Jones to make the save.
And it proved decisive as Canberra went down the other end to grab the lead midway through the first half.
The impressive Stephanie Ochs curled a brilliantly-timed shot around the keeping, with the ball going in off the post.
Glory hit back after the break and it was no surprise McCallum was the scorer, her stunning free-kick nestling in the top corner of the net.
Scores stayed level until 15 minutes from time when Canberra got their noses back in front and it when Sykes’ shot was too good for keeper Mackenzie Arnold.
In a crazy few minutes, Glory missed the chance to equalise again as Kate Gill missed a penalty before Sykes landed the killer blow 12 minutes from the end when she headed in Michelle Heyman’s cross.
While United missed a late penalty of their own, it mattered little as they held on for the win to secure their second Westfield W-League title.
