Westfield W-League Goal of Round 2 – Nikki Flannery

There was only going to be one winner of Westfield W-League Goal of Round 2 after Canberra United forward Nikki Flannery sent an injury-time strike from outside the box into the top left corner to hand her side victory over reigning Champions Melbourne City on Sunday afternoon.

Canberra led earlier in the contest thanks to a fourth goal for the 2020/21 campaign to Michelle Heyman but City captain Jenna McCormick pegged one back minutes later to set up a barnstorming finish to the contest.

City aren’t used to losing – their invincible 2019/20 campaign showed exactly that – and it seemed only natural that their undefeated run would be snapped by a piece of individual brilliance.

Flannery collected the ball with her back to goal outside of the box with 20 seconds left on the clock before added time would run out.

With Teigen Allen on her back and Sarah Cain pressuring from the side, the 21-year-old dribbled around her opponents to the right of the box before straightening up and leathering a strike toward the opposite corner of goal.

Not even the camera could keep up as the strike sailed toward goal beating City ‘keeper Teagan Micah and handing Canberra their second win of the season in dramatic fashion.
