Westfield W-League Goal of Round 12: Michelle Heyman

Michelle Heyman’s magnificent Westfield W-League renaissance continued in Round 12, as the Canberra United striker regained the outright lead as the league’s all-time top goalscorer with a brace against Perth Glory set to live long in the memory.

Heyman entered the round tied with Sam Kerr on 70 goals but took her tally to 72 by the end of her side’s 3-2 win over Glory. And her strike to go ahead of Kerr was scored in style, earning Heyman Goal of Round 12 honours.

Heyman showed speed and quick-thinking to burst onto a loose ball on the edge of the box, and with Glory ‘keeper Lily Alfeld rushing out to meet her she attempted to cut to her left and open up the space to score.

Alfeld got a glove on the ball and sent it back behind Heyman. The Canberra forward wasn’t willing to let the chance go by, as she wheeled around onto her right foot and shot on the turn, falling to the ground as the ball looped toward goal.

Alfeld was stuck off her line, and three Glory players had ventured back to block the shot – but Heyman’s attempt gave them no chance. The ball curled high over the heads of Glory defenders in the box and nestled into the top-right corner of goal, leaving all ten of Heyman’s United teammates to engulf the record-breaker in celebration.
