Westfield W-League Goal of Round 11 – Michelle Heyman

Michelle Heyman forged her name in Westfield W-League legend in Canberra United’s resounding win against the Brisbane Roar on Sunday and ex-Westfield Matilda Grace Gill picked the historic strike as Goal of the Round.

Heyman was on the mark in the 29th minute of the Green Machine’s 4-1 triumph over the high-flying Queenslanders at Viking Park, taking her competition tally to 70 goals and equalling the record set by Sam Kerr, and Gill was impressed with the fashion in which the milestone was achieved.

“I’m nominating Michelle Heyman’s goal against Brisbane Roar on Sunday, for a couple of reasons,” said Gill, who spent eight seasons playing for Canberra.

“It was of course the goal that brought her level with Sam Kerr on 70 goals, as the joint highest scorer in W-League history. But beyond that emotion, it was a technically very clever finish.

“Michelle timed her run beautifully, got off the shoulder of Kim Carroll and essentially left Kim with a foul as the only way of intervening, risking a dismissal.

“In the end Michelle made a difficult chance look really easy.”
