Westfield W-League Goal of the Month: Ayres’ long-range bomb

Melbourne Victory youngster Melina Ayres has claimed the Westfield W-League goal of the month for January, as voted by the fans.

The 18-year-old claimed the award for her stunning long-range strike against City in Round 11.

With her side trailing 1-0 with 20 minutes remaining, a piece of individual brilliance from Ayres turned the contest.

The attacker pounced on an error 35 yards from goal and instinctively elected to shoot from distance, catching Westfield Matildas goalkeeper Lydia Williams off her line.

The incredible strike sparked her side with Christina Gibbons netting a late goal to seal a 2-1 upset win for Victory.

After an impressive end to the season which included two goals, Ayres was named the NAB Young Footballer of the Year nominee for January on Friday.
