The Westfield W-League finals series kicks off this weekend and players from all remaining sides are keen to stake their claim for the title.
Damien de Bohun, Head of the Westfield W-League, today launched the Westfield W-League 2013 Finals Series with star players from all four competing sides – Brisbane Roar, Perth Glory, Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC – at Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre (QSAC), the home of Premiers Brisbane Roar.
The Westfield W-League 2013 Finals Series will feature this season-s top four teams facing off in knock-out Semi-Finals football with the action kicking off at 3pm AEST (4pm AEDT) on Saturday 19 January with Premiers Brisbane Roar renewing their fierce rivalry with Sydney FC at the Queensland Sport & Athletic Centre (QSAC) in Brisbane.
The second match of the Westfield W-League 2013 Finals Series will see this season-s surprise packet Perth Glory host their first ever Westfield W-League Finals Series match against Melbourne Victory at nib Stadium in Perth with the kick-off scheduled for 1pm AWST (4pm AEDT) on Sunday 20 January.
For fans from interstate that are unable to get to the games, both matches will be broadcast in full on ABC TV with coverage beginning from 4pm in each region (check local guides for details).
“The Westfield W-League 2012/13 Season has been the biggest, best and most competitive yet with the four finalists only cementing their positions in the top four following the final round of the regular season,” said de Bohun.
“Football fans have responded to the quality we-ve seen on the pitch with strong attendances around the country helping drive the league.
“We-re expecting thousands of fans around the country to don their club-s colours and cheer their team across the line in what is set to be a weekend of tense, exciting and quality finals football.”
One of the stars of the Brisbane Roar side over the past five seasons has been Elise Kellond-Knight who will attempt to get to her fifth consecutive Westfield W-League Grand Final this weekend.
“It-s every player-s dream to play in, and win a Grand Final,” said Kellond-Knight.
“It was a great achievement to finish the season as Premiers and we-re really proud of our record of competing in four Westfield W-League Grand Finals in a row. However the players know it won-t be easy this weekend against Sydney FC, and we-ll be giving everything in front of what should be a big crowd at QSAC, to ensure we-ll be hosting the Grand Final come the Australia Day weekend”.
While first time Semi-Finalists Perth Glory have defied the odds to secure a home Semi-Final, Glory star Kate Gill is determined to ensure the Glory finish Westfield W-League 2012/13 season as Champions.
“I think it-s fair to say we-ve shocked a lot of the pundits by making the top four this season and while it-s an historic achievement for the club, we want to repay our loyal fans- support by bringing the Westfield W-League trophy to the West for the first time,” said Glory striker and golden boot winner Kate Gill.
The winners of this weekend-s two Westfield W-League 2013 Finals Series matches will face off in the Westfield W-League 2013 Grand Final on Sunday, 27 January (venue TBC following this weekend-s matches).
