Football Federation Australia (FFA) has today released the season draw for the 2009 Westfield W-League (WWL).
The opening round, featuring the grand final rematch between reigning premiers Brisbane Roar and Canberra United, commences on Saturday 3 October finishing with the WWL Grand Final on Saturday 19 December 2009 .
This season will see a pulsating 10 round competition involving the eight incumbent teams: Adelaide United, Brisbane Roar, Canberra United, Central Coast Mariners, Melbourne Victory, Newcastle Jets, Perth Glory and Sydney FC.
The WWL will again see the top four teams face off for spot in the 2009 WWL Grand Final.
FFA CEO, Ben Buckley, reinforced FFA-s support for a strong women-s football competition in Australia.
“We see the Westfield W-League as an important fixture in our football calendar.
“With more than 100,000 women and girls playing football in this country the importance of a strong and competitive women-s league is integral to further growth in the sport and gives young talented sportswomen a league of their own to aspire to.
“The Westfield W-League is a highly credible competitive women’s competition and our plan for WWL in season two is to see the growth in popularity of women-s football continue.”
This season-s draw sees an increase in WWL and Hyundai A-League double headers at some of Australia-s premiere sporting arenas. All Brisbane Roar home matches will be played at their new den, Ballymore Stadium.
The 2009 season will also see a match broadcast every round live and exclusively on ABC TV including the first match of a WWL double header at Leichhardt Oval.
With the WWL now proving itself as a genuine career path for our female athletes football with style now has even more substance.
