The Australian Professional Leagues (APL) today announced that the Westfield W-League 2020/21 Round 7 fixture between Melbourne City FC and Sydney FC will now be played at AAMI Park behind closed doors.
APL Commissioner, Greg O’Rourke, said that the decision to move the match at late notice was made with player and match official welfare in mind.
“This morning we received a report that the playing surface at Frank Holohan Reserve had not met the standard acceptable for a Westfield W-League match to be played after recent rectification works,” said O’Rourke
“Melbourne City FC and the APL worked together to look at a number of alternate venues to host the match, but due to both operational and broadcast requirements, AAMI Park was the only venue available to stage this match at such short notice.
“Due to the short lead-time, it was not possible for us to get a spectator COVID-safe plan approved by Government in time to allow fans to attend the match in person.
“Whilst disappointing for local fans of Melbourne City FC and the Westfield W-League not to be able to attend, it was imperative that we moved to a venue where the playing surface was both suitable and safe for our players and match officials.
“Fans will be able to watch the match on FOX SPORTS 505, Kayo Sports and the MyFootball Live App,” concluded O’Rourke.
