All the round one action in the Westfield W-League reviewed, highlighted by a remarkable competition debut for Melbourne City.
The opening to the new Westfield W-League season was highlighted by a debut to remember for Melbourne City who collected a stunning 6-0 win over Sydney FC on Sunday.
The league’s new faces raced to a 4-0 lead by half-time with Larissa Crummer bagging a first-half double, which included the club’s first goal in the competition after 10 minutes.
The TV match earlier in the day was a far tighter affair as Brisbane Roar impressed with a 2-1 victory over champions Canberra United, having scored both their goals in the early stages.
Saturday saw premiers Perth Glory come from behind to open their campaign in winning fashion at Melbourne Victory. Westfield Matildas stars Caitlin Foord and Sam Kerr scored the goals, while the latter also saw a penalty blocked by Melissa Barbieri. Melbourne Victory’s Laura Spiranovic had the honour of scoring the first goal of the competition’s new season by netting after eight minutes.
There was also a notable comeback in Adelaide as United scored twice to secure an entertaining 2-2 draw against Western Sydney Wanderers.
