High-flying Central Coast Mariners have confirmed the signing of Christian Theoharous following his departure from Isuzu UTE A-League champions Western United and they have big plans for their recruit.
Theoharous and Western mutually agreed to part ways on Tuesday, with the former Borussia Monchengladbach youngster announced by the Mariners hours later.
The 23-year-old arrives in Gosford until the end of the current season, with an option to extend his stay at the second-placed Mariners.
“Looking at where the club is today, the opportunities that they give young players and just from having a chat with (Nick Montgomery), the Mariners feels like the perfect fit,” Theoharous.
“The way they play and the style that they play I believe suits me perfectly, it was a no- brainer really. I can’t wait to get the football underway and show everyone what I can do.”
Theoharous joined Western ahead of the 2021-22 season after he spent three seasons in Germany with Borussia Monchengladbach, where he made 26 appearances in total.
His stint with Western saw him feature four times last season as they conquered the Championship.
He also played a starring role in the NPL 3 Victoria last year to help guide Western to promotion having notched a goal and two assists in the play-offs.
Theoharous will bolster the Mariners’ attacking stocks and Montgomery stated his admiration for the youngster.
“We are extremely excited to bring a player of his talent to the Mariners. It is clear he has massive potential and we believe that together, if we can unlock it, he can be a future Socceroo,” he said.
“After speaking to him I believe he will fit into the group perfectly, creating further competition for places.”
