Western United FC win again in behind-closed-doors friendly against Melbourne City

Western United FC’s first-ever match against Hyundai A-League opposition has ended in a win over Melbourne City on Tuesday afternoon.

Mark Rudan’s side won 2-1 in a behind-closed-doors friendly at City’s CFA Melbourne base.

The sides exchanged chances early on before the Hyundai A-League newcomers went in front on 28 minutes via a bizarre own goal.

City keeper Dean Bouzanis played the ball to defender Harrison Delbridge whose return pass to the gloveman was over-hit and ended in the back of the net.

The hosts hit back immediately after the break when youngsters Moudi Najjar and Ramy Najjarine combined, with the latter able to tap the ball in from close range.

United restored their lead just before the hour mark through one of their most impressive performers of the pre-season campaign so far.

A frantic goal-mouth scramble in the City box ended with Valentino Yuel dispatching a poacher’s effort past Bouzanis.

Delbridge almost made amends for his earlier own goal with a towering header from Adrian Luna’s free-kick.

But United held on for a fourth win from four pre-season games so far and their first against a fellow Hyundai A-League side.
