Western Sydney now possess ‘the one thing they lacked last year’ says Georgievski

Daniel Georgievski joined Western Sydney Wanderers with a feeling everything was about to change.

And now, after his side continued their perfect start to the 2019/20 Hyundai A-League campaign with a 1-0 win over rivals Sydney FC, he’s already seeing his vision come to fruition.

“The reason I came here was because I knew something was going to happen with this club,” Georgievski said.

“I felt it at the Jets, I felt it at Victory, and I think results speak for itself.

“The one thing [the Wanderers] lacked last year, when we were playing against them we just knew we were going to score.

“I didn’t feel like we were going to concede.

“I just knew we weren’t going to concede.”

The Wanderers kept a clean sheet against a rampant Sydney FC who peppered Daniel Lopar in the Western Sydney goal, hitting the crossbar in the first half and the bottom of the right-hand post in the second in a hotly debated moment where the ball seemed to have crossed the line.

As Sydney players and staff burst into a passionate uproar when a goal was not awarded, Georgievski knew his side had ridden their luck.

“I thought it went in to tell you the truth,” Georgievski said.

“I looked at it and went, ‘we’re not in the Premier league’; it was one of those millimetre ones.”

After the contentious moment passed and the Wanderers held on to grab all three points, it wasn’t just Georgievski wiping beads of sweat from his brow thinking they had gotten away with one.

Wanderers ‘keeper Lopar, who was on hand in that contentious moment to scoop the ball up before it fully crossed the line, was similarly relieved when the full-time whistle blew.

“Honestly we had a little bit of luck,” Lopar said.

“I hope we don’t need luck for the whole season.

“The ball comes in my six-yard-box and perhaps I can come out but they block me all the time.

“In this situation I had big luck, you have to earn this luck and today it was on my side.”

But one man who won’t be agreeing with his Wanderers teammates is Western Sydney captain Mitch Duke, who scored the all-important goal in the first Sydney Derby at Bankwest Stadium.

Luck was not a factor in the eyes of the Wanderers attacker who scored his third goal of the season with a diving header in the first half which sent the home crowd into pandemonium.

Instead of crediting luck for the result, Duke puts his side’s victory down to the age-old adage which applies to every derby game: it all comes down to the big moments, and who takes them.

“Unbelievable, what a game to break them dominating the derby for so long,” Duke said.

“These derby matches, they’re all about one key moment.”

“We were under the pump for most of the game, but it was one of those split moments that we took.

“Luckily enough we took it. It was great play, a great cross by Georgievski and I just had to guide it into the goal.

“I can’t breathe, it’s amazing, a great feeling, and that’s for the fans.

“The last three weeks we’ve been building, we were under the pump but we showed great character to get the result.”
