Wellington Phoenix v Adelaide United: match preview

The resurgent Adelaide United dealt with one Finals Series contender last Sunday; now they have to prove their metal once again when third-placed Wellington Phoenix come knocking on Saturday night.

Carl Veart took charge in his first game as interim Head Coach for the Reds against Brisbane Roar in their first game since the Hyundai A-League relaunch and came away with all three points, securing a slender 1-0 victory.

It was the Reds’ first win in five games as they ended a four-match losing streak and surged back into sixth position on the Hyundai A-League table.

And they’ll be out for vengeance against a Phoenix outfit which stole all three points in a come-from-behind 2-1 win when the two sides last met at Coopers Stadium in Round 8.

Wellington come into the contest with the Reds with their gaze firmly set on second spot on the Hyundai A-League table – a 2-1 win over Perth Glory on Wednesday night took Ufuk Talay’s side to within one point of second-placed Melbourne City with a game in hand on their title rivals.

But three points won’t come easily for Wellington; the Reds have games in hand on both Western United and Western Sydney Wanderers who will push hard for a place in the top six, handing Carl Veart’s a win-at-all-costs task over the last four games of the 2019/20 campaign to ensure he keeps Adelaide’s Finals Series hopes alive.
