Wellington Phoenix re-sign ‘cult hero’ who played 5 positions in first pro season

Wellington Phoenix’s Corban Piper has signed a contract extension with the Isuzu UTE A-League club.

Piper has committed his future to the Phoenix for the next two seasons after impressive in his first professional campaign.

The 22-year-old workhorse joined Wellington on a scholarship deal heading into 2024-25 and he quickly became a “cult hero” thanks to his versatility, having played five positions as a full-back, centre-back, central midfielder, winger and striker.

Piper has scored three goals in 21 appearances during his rookie campaign – only Phoenix great Kosta Barbarouses (10) has scored more goals this term.

“The Phoenix gave me my first taste of professional football and I’ve really enjoyed my time here,” Piper said.

“I got my chance to play as a result of the team’s injuries this season, and I guess I took it quite well.

“I get along with the boys really well and can’t wait for the next two years.

“Over the upcoming seasons I’m going to develop myself technically and hopefully become the polished player that Chiefy wants me to be.”

Phoenix head coach Giancarlo ‘Chiefy’ Italiano – who is building towards next season after missing out on the top six – added: “Corbs has an incredible attitude and I think that’s what’s endeared him to the fans.

“He gives 110% every day at training and during matches and if I had 11 players with Corbs’ attitude we wouldn’t lose many matches.

“The exciting thing is he can improve a lot. I’m looking forward to witnessing that improvement first hand at the Phoenix.”
