A magnificent midweek marathon kicks off at the Westpac Stadium! Will Wellington go goal crazy again?
An astonishing day of Hyundai A-League action gets under way at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium on Wednesday, as Phoenix and Sydney go head-to-head in the first of five games to take place back-to-back.
Be part of this historic event by securing a ticket today and getting behind your team!
Phoenix have taken nine points from their last three home games, but they’ll need your help if they are to make it four on the spin against a very decent Sydney side. So, pull on your colours and make some noise!
The Fever Zone will be hoping that 2012 at Westpac Stadium starts in the same explosive fashion in which 2011 ended. The last time Phoenix took to the field here, just before Christmas, fans were treated to a seven goal cracker, with the home side dishing out the festive gifts in the form of five goals and three crucial points.
It was the Dani Sanchez and Mirjan Pavlovic show against Newcastle Jets as the Yellow & Black ran out 5-2 winners in a display which saw them play some of their best football of the Hyundai A-League 2011/12 season. Sanchez oozed class, netting in the 16th and 34th minutes, while Chris Greenacre had the points in the bag by the 39th minute. Not a bad way to celebrate his 34th birthday!
Between Jets scoring early in the second-half and grabbing a late consolation, Pavlovic, who replaced Sanchez, hit two in as many minutes to send a noisy and boisterous Westpac Stadium wild!
However, unlike Newcastle, Sydney aren’t adverse to playing away from home, as they proved in their last away game, also against the Jets, at Ausgrid Stadium in a tough F3 derby, the visitors fell behind – as they have done so often this season – but fought back in typically dogged and determined fashion to secure a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Bruno Cazarine and Juho Makela.
While Wellington are decent at home, Sydney have illustrated time and time again that they are no mugs on the road.
However, Wellington have already shown that they can overcome the Sky Blues on home soil this season.
Back in Week Eight, a truly amazing Tim Brown volley was worth the admission fee alone, as the home side came out on top by the odd goal in three. After Paul Ifill’s seventh-minute opener gave Phoenix the perfect start, Brown sent the Fever Zone crazy with an unbelievable 45-metre dipping volley on the hour. Cazarine’s scrambled strike in the 70th minute wasn’t enough to spark a comeback that has been representative of Sydney’s fine season thus far.
While Phoenix are a tough nut to crack at Westpac Stadium, the Sky Blues simply never give up, so, Fever Zone, there can be no room for complacency on Wednesday. Sing yourself hoarse for 90 minutes to ensure your side does the double over their NSW rivals. Your support is crucial. Make it count!
