Sydney’s two away games in a row will have pleased their fans in that their players proved what a never-say-die attitude they have. Falling 1-0 behind to Adelaide, they came back to win the game 2-1 and, last week, they showed similar guts against Melbourne Heart.
Most teams, when conceding an 88th minute opener away from home would drop their heads and fall to defeat. Not Sydney FC. They kept on believing and, four minutes into stoppage time, stunned the majority of the AAMI Park crowd into silence with Nicky Carle’s strike. Determination like that will serve them well this season.
Now they’ll be looking to translate their away form into the home arena, having lost in their only appearance at SFS this season. Despite putting in a decent enough display, they were beaten 2-0 by all-conquering Brisbane Roar.
They pulled in over 15,000 fans on that occasion, and will be hoping for another big turnout from citizens of the Harbour City on Sunday. They’ll be looking to repay the noise and support that their loyal fans continually show them by delivering three points and a great display.
However, gaining a win won’t be easy for The Sky Blues. They come up against a quality opponent in Gold Coast United, who lie fifth in the ladder after securing their first win of the season having turned over Newcastle Jets on Sunday.
After impressive Dutchman Maceo Rigters opening the scoring with his first goal for his new club in the 11th minute, the result rarely seemed in doubt. Second-half strikes from veteran Kristian Rees and the seemingly unstoppable youngster James Brown sealed the win and should leave Sunday’s hosts in no doubt that they are a side not to be taken lightly.
Indeed, the club’s previous meetings suggest that United should be very confident of success this weekend. While Sydney won the last meeting between the sides, it remains the only time that the Gold Coast have lost to Sunday’s opponents. The six clashes have resulted in an impressive four wins for the men in yellow. Sky Blues beware!
