It’s a top of the table thriller as Roar and Mariners play the biggest game of the season so far! Don’t miss it!
Suncorp Stadium hosts an absolute belter of a clash on Saturday night, as ladder leaders Roar take on second-placed Central Coast Mariners. This game could have a massive impact on the way the remainder of the Hyundai A-League 2011/12 season plays out, so make sure you are in attendance to see which one of these title-chasing rivals will get the upper-hand. It is set to be epic. Be a part of it!
As well as battling to get one over their most dangerous competitors, Roar will be looking at this as an opportunity to turn Suncorp Stadium into the fortress that it once was. After all, few people foresaw what occurred last Friday night. Having suffered their first defeat in 37 games in Sydney a week earlier, Brisbane were expected to bounce straight back and take it out on Melbourne Heart. The evening didn’t quite turn out like that though, and a rather listless display saw them defeated at home for the first time since January 2010. After a midweek match in New Zealand, Ange Postecoglou’s men are back at Suncorp Stadium, and looking to give their loyal home following something to cheer about.
A repeat of the performance that got the ball rolling in Week One would certainly do for the Queensland side. Then, they overcame this weekend’s opponents 1-0 in a game which displayed everything that is good about Brisbane’s style of play. They created plenty of chances, defended strongly, built from the back with quick and fluid passing and were patient when it came to striking the killer blow.
Of course, no match-up between these two great sides can pass without mentioning one of the most dramatic football matches ever played on Australian soil – last season’s Grand Final, when Roar broke Mariner’s hearts with two late, late goals and then were triumphant on penalties. It was an incredible occasion and the Central Coast are still waiting to gain their revenge for that agonising defeat. Will this Saturday be the night? If they play anything like they did in their last away match – a 4-0 thrashing of Adelaide United – or their last home game – a powerful 2-0 win over local rivals Newcastle – then maybe it will be.
It’s Roar v Mariners, and it’s about as mouth-watering a match as you could possibly hope for. Recently, Brisbane have proved themselves to be a long way from the invincibles we thought they were, so now could be the time for this sensational Central Coast Mariners team to strike. Orange Army, you’ll need to be in full voice if you want to avoid such an occurrence. Fill Suncorp Stadium with colour and noise and help your team send home these pretenders to the throne empty-handed!
