Nobody who was in attendance when Adelaide United last visited Suncorp Stadium will forget the occasion easily. It was the night when the Brisbane Roar footballing machine clicked into gear as perfectly as it ever has and was a masterclass in passing, movement and deadly finishing. B
esart Berisha was the hero on the night, striking four times, including an astonishing first-half hat-trick in six minutes as Roar went on to win 7-1.
Despite conceding their first goal of the season to fall behind early on, the home team simply brushed their opponents aside with a pair of penalties from Henrique and a late Issey Nakajima-Farran goal to compliment the Albanian’s contribution.
With the Premier’s Plate still in their sites, Brisbane will hope they can find a similarly great display as they look to get back to winning ways after disappointment last weekend.
Roar put in a good performance against Melbourne Heart and were only denied a fifth straight win because of a sensational injury-time penalty save by Clint Bolton. It seemed as though three points were Brisbane’s when Mitch Nichols belted in the opener on the half hour mark, but Curtis Good drew Melbourne level just after half time. When Besart Berisha won a spot-kick at the death, Mohamed Adnan had the chance to take the Premiers temporarily back to the top of the ladder, but Bolton had other ideas.
While their season has been a disappointing one, United will go into this weekend’s game hopeful they can put in the kind of display that saw them take a well-earned point from the current Premiers in their meeting at Hindmarsh Stadium.
After Nakajima-Farran scored against The Reds for the second game in a row, a 79th minute Sergio van Dijk spot kick was enough to ensure a share of the spoils.
They’ll visit Suncorp Stadium knowing that they have little but pride to play for in the Hyundai A-League after last week’s disappointing 2-0 defeat against Perth Glory at Hindmarsh.
First half goals from Glory’s Billy Mehmet and Jacob Burns did the crucial damage. On a miserable evening, United substitute Fabian Barbiero was sent off following an off-the-ball incident. Despite their league standing, they will be playing for their ever-loyal fans and looking to erase the horrific memory of last time they turned out at Suncorp Stadium.
With Central Coast Mariners in horrific form at the moment, the Premier’s Plate is still there for the taking. Massive noise and commitment from the stands can push Roar towards three points that will put huge pressure on their silverware rivals.
