The Central Coast Mariners will be desperate to get their Premiers Plate charge back on track against Brisbane Roar on Wednesday after going three games without a win.
More than 10,000 supporters packed out the Central Coast Stadium on Saturday to watch Alen Stajcic’s side let a two-goal lead slip in a pulsating 2-2 draw with Sydney FC as the Gosford-based club bid for a first A-League Premiership in nine years.
With Melbourne City and Adelaide United dropping points in the following days, the Yellow and Navy faithful’s dreams of lifting the trophy are still in tact – but a win against an in-form Brisbane side is almost a must for the Mariners to keep their challenge alive.
Whatever the outcome of the final stretch of the season, a top-six place would mark a dramatic turnaround for the club rooted to the wooden spoon slot for the past three seasons. Meanwhile, a second consecutive Finals Series finish is still well within the sights of their opponents on Wednesday.
Warren Moon’s Queenslanders sit in ninth, four points off the finals spots with two games in hand, and if they could take maximum points from those unplayed games they would be among the contenders at the top of the competition ladder.
The absence, and subsequent departure, of veteran forward Scott McDonald has not stopped Brisbane from claiming back-to-back road wins against Macarthur FC and Western Sydney Wanderers. A third straight scalp in New South Wales, 12 days after their last game, would have Roar fans dreaming of even brighter days to follow in the coming weeks.
