Wednesday night preview: A-League, May 5

Matchweek 19 comes to its conclusion with an A-League double-header on Wednesday, May 5, with Brisbane Roar hosting Western United before Melbourne City travel to take on Perth Glory.

The Roar are eyeing off a place in the top six leading into the contest with Western United at Moreton Daily Stadium, kicking off at 7.05pm AEST. Warren Moon’s side are eighth on the A-League table but can jump Western Sydney Wanderers, United and Macarthur FC to surge into fifth with a Wednesday-night win.

United occupy sixth position heading into its second game of Matchweek 18, after playing out a goalless draw with Adelaide United on Friday, April 30.

Mark Rudan’s team have gone unbeaten in four games (W2, D2), and with just 18 games played to date the Green and Black hold games in hand over four of the five teams above them on the table. United can go level with third-placed Sydney FC on 31 points by beating Roar on the road.

These two teams last met in Matchweek 12, when a Dylan Pierias goal handed United a slender 1-0 win at AAMI Park.

At the conclusion of Wednesday night’s first fixture, attention will turn to Western Australia as Perth Glory welcome Melbourne City to AAMI Park. City have built a three-point gap over Central Coast Mariners at the top of the table; with two games in hand on the Mariners and third-placed Sydney FC and one game in hand on Adelaide United in fourth, City have wrestled the ascendancy in a tight race for the Premiers Plate.

The league-leaders can go six points clear by the end of Matchweek 19, but will need to win against Perth on the road.

Glory cruised to a 3-1 win over City in Matchweek 6 – the first of three consecutive losses early doors for the Victorian outfit – but Patrick Kisnorbo’s side have since turned up the heat, going on a club-record run of six wins through Matchweeks 9-14 and building up a five-game unbeaten run heading into Wednesday night after a loss to Western United in Matchweek 15.

With just one defeat from 12 games, the table-toppers will have confidence in beating a Perth side without a win in five games, seeing Finals Series football escaping from its grasp as each game goes by.
