Adelaide United has signed Oakleigh Cannons’ midfielder Cameron Watson on a short-term contract to bolster its squad in the absence of Fabian Barbiero, who is recovering from an ankle injury.
A former member of the Young Socceroos, Watson has spent the last three years in the Victorian Premier League after stints at Portuguese Liga giants FC Porto and Dutch club VVV-Venlo.
The 23-year-old will slot into United’s midfield to cover for Barbiero, who is expected to miss another three weeks with ligament damage.
Watson will be hoping prove himself in his month-long stint at United after previously failing to impress in trials for Melbourne Victory, Sydney FC and Melbourne Heart.
He will get his first opportunity on Friday night when the Reds travel to Townsville to take on North Queensland Fury in a pre-season friendly.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Victorian left back Bradley Norton will also be making the trip north after being offered a trial by the club.
