Adelaide United have re-signed Cameron Watson on a four-week contract after it was revealed on Tuesday full-back Daniel Mullen would miss up to three weeks after injuring his ankle at training.
Watson had made 10 appearances for the Reds as a short term signing to cover United’s injuries, but along with Joe Keenan, had to farewell the squad when their contracts ended after the Round 10 match against Gold Coast United.
United were unable to re-sign the pair despite still having Nigel Boogaard (ankle) and Lloyd Owusu (knee) on the long term injury list as they had been brought in specifically to replace Fabian Barbiero and Travis Dodd.
Adelaide football director Michael Petrillo admitted the club is relieved to regain Watson’s services, who plugged the hole at right back when Mullen toured Vietnam with the Qantas Olyroo squad, before the extent of the 21 year-old’s injury was revealed.
“Cameron is an injury replacement for Daniel, who we expect to be out for at least three weeks,” confirmed Petrillo.
“He’s the obvious replacement and we’re very happy to have Cam back, he’ll have no problem slipping straight back into the team.”
Watson originally joined United’s squad as cover for Barbiero but the midfielder impressed when filling the hole at right back.
The 23 year-old, who had returned to Victoria, answered the Reds’ SOS and will train with United on Thursday before flying to Melbourne ahead of Saturday night’s game.
