Imagine going four years without a goal then scoring an absolute worldie to complete your brace?
Step forward Western United full-back Ben Garuccio.
Garuccio broke the internet and people’s minds with his ‘scorpion’ goal in Sunday’s Isuzu UTE A-League fixture.
After putting Western 2-0 ahead at half-time, he sent shockwaves through AAMI Park and around the A-Leagues with an absolutely incredible 68th-minute effort.
Teed up by Aleksandar Prijovic’s inch-perfect pass, amazing in its own right, Garuccio put forward his Puskas Award nomination.
“That’s not a goal, that’s a freak show,” said Network 10 and Paramount+ commentator/analyst Andy Harper, who referenced acrobatic former Colombia goalkeeper Rene Higuita.
“This is Rene Higuita on steroids. This is remarkable.
“I’ve seen it four times and I still don’t believe.”
“Riley McGree eat your heart out,” added Simon Hill.
A moment that will never be forgotten, not only in the A-Leagues but world football.
“I did mean it but could I do it again in 1,000 goes? Probably not,” Garuccio told Paramount+.
“I did it a few weeks ago in training and I faceplanted. I suppose it’s just one of those – 1 in 1,000.”
Dissecting the goal after receiving a sublime pass from Aleksandar Prijovic, Garuccio said: “The ball sort of came behind me. I made the run. I saw Alex get the ball.
“I saw both defenders go out and I thought I’d try to make the run. To be fair, it was an unbelievable ball.
“I threw my leg at it and tried to watch it as best I could. I looked up and it was in the net.
“I couldn’t concentrate for the rest of the game. I was daydreaming.”
