Newcastle Jets 1-2 Sydney FC

The rock bottom Newcastle Jets showed some promising signs in their first match since the sacking of Ernie Merrick but a lack of cutting edge and two defensive meltdowns cost them in the Hunter.

Adam Le Fondre and Kosta Barabouses capitalised for the Hyundai A-League leaders in an otherwise uninspiring display from Steve Corica’s side. Steven Ugarkovic hit a stunner for the Jets.

Ulises Davila and Liberato Cacace scored in either half for Wellington Phoenix to equal the club’s record nine-match unbeaten run and consign Western Sydney Wanderers to 2-0 defeat in the Kiwi capital.

Mexican international Davila broke the deadlock with his ninth goal of the campaign and Ufuk Talay’s men held their opponents at arm’s length before making the three points secure through Cacace.
