Wanderers with work to do

The Western Sydney Wanderers may have impressed in their Hyundai A-League debut but skipper Michael Beauchamp knows there are still many that doubt they can cut it this season.

The Western Sydney Wanderers may have impressed in their Hyundai A-League debut but skipper Michael Beauchamp knows there are still many that doubt they can cut it this season.

While there was plenty to like in last weekend’s 0-0 draw against the Central Coast, the tough-tackling central defender knows his side must continue to get results if they are to prove people wrong.

“We’ve got the monkey off our back because there was a lot of eyes on us for that (first) game,” Beauchamp said ahead of Friday night’s tricky clash against Adelaide at Hindmarsh Stadium.

“But I think there’ll be even more this week because there’s still the doubters out there of our team

“It’s definitely not in our dressing room or within our club.

“We believe in what we’re doing and the way we’re going about things is the right way and we’re going to continue to prove people wrong.”

Asked how it felt to have people doubt the side’s credentials, Beauchamp said: “It’s part of the game … you’ll always have guys that like you and goes that don’t in any sport or job for the matter.

“We just have to go out there and do our own thing.

“We know what we’re capable of and we’ll continue to do that.

“With the backing of the club and supporters I think we can continue to do good things this season and be competitive and for a first time team, I don’t think you can ask for much more.”

Wanderers coach Tony Popovic has hinted Japanese star Shinji Ono is a chance to start against the Reds after impressing in his 30-minute cameo last weekend.

The 33-year-old has settled well in Sydney’s west and has had a strong full week of training with the rest of his team-mates to push for a start.

“It’s definitely a possibility, but we’ll decide that (on Friday) whether he starts or not,” Popovic said.

“But each day he’s getting stronger, he’s getting fitter, he’s fitting into what we’re trying to do here at the club and he’s looking happy which is important.

“So I’m sure game by game he’ll keep on improving.”

Meanwhile Popovic isn’t concerned of a potential letdown among his squad after the hype and excitement of their league debut last weekend.

“Not if you go by the preparation this week and the training we’ve put in,” he said.

“The boys have been positive; it’s been focused all week and all looking forward to next challenge.

“I can’t guarantee what will happen on the day but judging by the week we’ve had I’m pleased how we’ve prepared and pleased with the frame of mind they are in.

“It’s our in first away game in a hostile environment against a very good side and we’re just looking forward to the challenge.”

The Wanderers hopes have been boosted by the fact a hamstring injury has ruled out influential Reds midfielder Dario Vidosic.
