Wanderers seek inspiration from Europe’s elite

Asian champions Western Sydney Wanderers FC have visited some of Europe’s champion clubs – including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United – to learn more about how to grow their club into an even bigger force.

In a letter penned to the club’s fans today, Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas outlined details of a two-week European fact-finding mission as the club plans the next phase in their development on and off the field.

“Over the past two weeks our Chairman Paul Lederer and I have embarked on a comprehensive visit to some of world football’s top clubs; clubs synonymous with success, ingenuity and changing the face of football both on and off the pitch,” Tsatsimas wrote on the Wanderers club site.

“A focus on training facilities, player amenities, academy structures, commercial operations and what it means to be an internationally renowned football club were the core elements of our venture.

“This was a best practice expedition, one with learnings that will drive our football club into an even brighter future; one that will continue the building process that will make the Western Sydney Wanderers the strongest football club in Australia.”

Wanderers listened and discussed various issues with clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, Borrusia Mönchengladbach, Reading, Brighton & Hove Albion, Arsenal, Manchester United, Feyenoord, Ajax, AZ Alkmaar, Utrecht, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Tsatsimas added the club’s achievements in Australia and Asian hadn’t gone unnoticed in European football circles as the club continues its drive forward to be the biggest in Australia.

“Three years from no name, no culture, no staff and no players to the path we find ourselves on. While there will always be hiccups and periods where we rightly only focus on the now, a step back will show a much brighter picture,” he said.

After making back-to-back grand finals in their first two Hyundai A-League seasons Tsatsimas admitted  boosting the squad for next season was on the agenda during his 12-day assignment.

“It [the trip] also served as a valuable opportunity to observe a number of players outlined by our football department to enable us to witness first hand potential additions to the squad for next season.”
