Wanderers rise on the Hyundai A-League ladder is news to de Marigny

Three points against Brisbane Roar on Friday night will send Western Sydney Wanderers surging into the top six – but, if that happens, somebody better tell Jean-Paul de Marigny.

The Red and Black’s interim coach has led his side to three wins and a draw in four matches since taking charge on the outskirts of the Harbour City, including a stunning 1-0 win against Sydney FC on their crosstown rivals’ own territory last week.

That strong run of form has launched Western Sydney from ninth place, six points adrift of the Hyundai A-League Finals Series places, to eighth – now only two points off Friday’s opponents Brisbane Roar.

Not that de Marigny would have noticed Wanderers’ rise in the standings. The 56-year-old reveals he has no intention of even glancing an eye at the ladder.

“To be honest, I haven’t looked at the table,” said de Marigny.

“I don’t think there’s any good energy in doing that.

“I’ve never done it in my life, it’s all about performance, excursion equals outcomes – that’s all I look at.

“You’re in control of your group, your players, your staff – that’s what we spend our energy on and all the rest will come out.”

For Wanderers, it’s one away game down and two to go as they prepare for a stretch of three straight road matches – with Melbourne City up next after Friday’s trip to face Robbie Fowler’s outfit in Queensland.

But heading off on their travels does not change de Marigny’s mindset, as Western Sydney’s interim coach insists the location of the battle does not change the Red and Black’s tactical approach.

“[Brisbane] are well organised but there are certain areas that we can feel we can take advantage of,” he added.

“We need to aware of their threats. We’ve analysed them throughout the week.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s at home or away, we’ll continue to do what we do.

“For us, the only thing that we’ve done so far is given us a platform for where we want to go.”
