Wanderers peaking at right time: Neville

After back-to-back wins in the Hyundai A-League, defender Scott Neville says the Wanderers are brimming with confidence and are ready for a late season charge towards the Grand Final.

After consecutive wins at home against Phoenix and City, the Wanderers are hitting form at the right time with only three regular season matches to go before the finals series begins.

Despite conceding an early goal in Friday night’s clash against Melbourne City, Neville says the response to rally back and claim the three points is a sign of how far the team has come.

“The way we came back was fantastic and it just shows the spirit and fight that we have,” he said.

“I think the style of play we have been playing all year is really starting to come into fruition and we are capitalising on the chances we have been creating.”

The result against City cemented the Wanderers firmly in the top six and they are now five points ahead of seventh-placed Wellington, though Neville says the focus is solely on Newcastle on Saturday.

“We just go week-by-week and this week it’s Newcastle,” he said.

“They had a pretty bad result last week against Wellington, so they’ll be looking to bounce back at home and will be playing for a lot of pride so we’ve got to make sure we really switch on and keep climbing up that table to get as high as possible going into the finals.”

The Wanderers will be looking for their third consecutive win of the season this round, a feat they haven’t achieved since the end of last season, and Neville says a win on Saturday will be a massive boost for the team’s confidence.

“It’ll be huge, I think we are hitting form at the right time of the season,” he said.

“We’ve got to continue this momentum and continue this style of play we are playing because it’s a really attractive brand for us.

“It works well and we have worked hard all season.

“We want to make sure we are there come Grand Final day – that’s what the goal is.”
